Why there is a travel medicine especialization?

People when in their home environment live in equilibrium with the locally microorganisms and with the altitude and climatic conditions of the region. An international travel upset this equilibrium because of sudden exposure to different altitude, humidity, microbial flora, temperature. Also stress, fatigue and time zone change syndrome or "Jet-Lag".

These may result in ill-health and of course, all risks are influenced by characteristics of the traveller (including age, sex, behavior and health status) as well as the characteristics of the travel (destination, purpose, standarts of accomodation, food hygiene and duration).
Appropriate preventive measures and careful precautions can reduce the risks of adverse health consequences.

At destination, a travel doctor knows exactly what the most common problems are and he also knows how to solve these problems fast and precisely.
Traveling is for leisure and to get to know other cultures, therefore, enjoy yourself and try to have a good a trip.

Yes, you have a specialist to care your health ... and your trip. Enjoy it!!

General advice: Before travel, look for a travel clinic for especific advice. Some destinations demand vaccines and special orientation. On International Society of Travel Medicine site (www.istm.org) you can find the best travel clinics around the world.

International travellers are always advised to seek health travel insurance that includes coverage for changes to the itinerary, emergency repatriation for health reasons, hospitalization, medical care in case of illness or accident and repatriation of the body in case of death.

A medical kit should be carried for all destinations. This kit will include basic medicines to treat common symptoms, first-aid articles, and any special medical items that may be needed by the individual traveller.

During the flight, hundreds of changes occurs in our body, and some problems can show up, such as low pressure and inactivity that can make your feet and ankle swollen. Walking every 2 hours in the plane can help you a lot with that. Some especial cases demand especific medication to prevent thrombosis. Ask your doctor about it.

Low humidity can affect your upper airways, so drinking water is good (avoid alcohol or gaseous drinks). Mentol candies and to use salty water in your nose will also help you. If you feel sick on board tell the crew right away and if you use any medication, always keep it close to you.

Solar protection is mandatory at our beaches, even when it´s cloudy. Ask our doctors which SPF (solar protection factor) is the best for your kind of skin and use it 1 hour before going to the beach and then again every 2 hours. It´s better to wear white or light t-shirts, sunglasses and a cap or hat. Between 11 am and 3 pm you should be in the shade drinking our famous coconut water and listening to some brazilian music. It´s also fun! Our beaches are beautiful, but you must be respectfull with the ocean. Staying near the shoreline is safest.

Brazilian cuisine is delicious, but different from what you are used to. Be carefull with seafood. Shrimp, lobster and shellfish are tasty, but can be hard to digest. Tap water is not for drinking. If you get cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, rashes on your body or itching after eating a food, seek medical advice straightaway. Traveler´s diarrhoea usually is self-limited, but we are sure you don´t want to lose one minute from your vacation.

If you find your love here, don't forget to use a condom during all intercourse and oral sex.
HIV, Hepatites B and other diseases can be hidden in beautifull bodies also. So be very careful!
